Sedation Dentistry

Richardson, TX

Sedation dentistry provides additional comfort and relaxation during an individual’s dental treatment. Sedation is often used for long and extensive procedures, such as fillings, extractions, crowns, or root canals. But, at Life Smiles Dental Care , we do not limit sedation dentistry to those procedures. Sedation is also available for patients who have anxiety during their visits to our family dental clinic or for our young patients who have difficulties sitting still. If you or your child has a low pain tolerance or a strong gag reflex, sedation dentistry may be something to consider to make your visit to the dentist more pleasant.

We offer the following sedation dentistry services for our patients:

NITROUS OXIDE
Most often referred to as “laughing gas,” this type of sedation is used in general dentistry to reduce anxiety and get favorable treatment outcomes in adults and children of all ages. This gas is a mild sedative that is administered with a mixture of oxygen. While under the influence of nitrous oxide, patients are still conscious and can communicate with staff during their procedure. After the procedure, the gas is turned off and oxygen is administered for several minutes to flush out any remaining nitrous and the effects wear off quickly. Your dentist will advise you of any potential side effects and post-treatment needs.

ORAL SEDATION
This is an office procedure offered by Life Smiles Dental Care to help anxious individuals relax during their dental visit. Usually, this is a pill that is taken about an hour before the procedure. Patients are completely conscious and responsive during their treatment.

IV SEDATION / HOSPITAL SEDATION
This is an in-office procedure done by the anesthesiologist to produce deep conscious sedation. This type of sedation is often administered through an IV and is constantly monitored. We also provide hospital-administered sedation. The dentist then completes the treatment while the patient is under sedation. This can occur in a dental clinic, as well as in a hospital environment.
